Dr. Marwa Shekfeh
Post-doctoral Fellow
Biosketch:
I was born in Syrian and spent my childhood in Syria, Algeria, and France. I graduated from Damascus
University with a bachelor's degree in Computer science and Engineering in 2007. I moved to the United
States right after my graduation and I earned my master's in computer engineering from UC (University
of Cincinnati) in 2009. In UC, I was lucky to attend Dr. Ali Minai's famous classes Intelligent Systems and
Complex Systems which were my gateway to AI and complexity theory. I joined Dr. Minai's lab CASL:
Complex Adaptive Systems Lab
(https://eecs.ceas.uc.edu/~minaiaa/casl.htm)
as a PhD student and graduated in 2017. During my PhD, I studied multi-agent systems, reinforcement learning, Natural Language Processing and
Bayesian networks. I also studied learning from
psychological and cognitive perspective. Therefore, I developed a unique model of multiagent implicit learning
which had the capability of modeling idea exchange in social networks, quantifying the effect of
misinformation and the effect of informed/misinformed minorities on the crowd. Late in my PhD, I came across several approaches to apply AI in early diagnosis and prognosis of cancer
which motivated me to seek a professional certificate of Applied Data Science in Life sciences. I joined the NCI in 2021 as a postdoctoral researcher with the goal of applying my skills in AI and
data science to study and understand cancer as a complex system.
